Part four of my Generation Kill picspam. This is episode four, Combat Jack.

Some things:

→ I love that Colbert falls apart so silently (I mean, obviously I don't love that the real Colbert felt like that but from a purely narrative p.o.v it's really great). Seeing the Iceman who is normally so there for his team just close himself off is a far better commentary on the cost of war and what the death of innocent civilians means to the Marines than any hyperbolic philosophic waxing that could've gone on here if it weren't that HBO were so committed to representing the book and these Marines so honestly.
→ Love that camouflage netting shadow on Poke. Why yes Mr Huertas you are looking mighty fine.
→ I love that it's Doc who tells Encino Man that he's incompetent. It means so much coming from him imo.
→ Stark Sands please stop having such gorgeous eyes you make picspamming incredibly distracting!
→ This scene with Captain America in the field broke my heart. He has no fucking clue what he's doing and he's terrified.
→ Love Alex's look here.
→ The real Eric Kocher's smile is so lovely.
→ I still can't make out the tattoo, even after reading the description of it in the book (I think it's the book?)
→ I love that cap/moment with Brad leaning into Trombley he's so fatherly with him.
→ I want some Walt/Brad fic please?! PLEASE?! I can't help it. That cap does things to me.
→ Oh Pawal how are you so adorable?!
→ I know I've mentioned this before but those humvees against the horizon are fucking beautiful!
→ The scene with the girl in the back of the car is probably what was the turning point for me for the series. I'm very anti-war but supportive of the men and women who are just doing their job without any real help from their governments and superiors. However normally when you read about some innocent child being killed in a roadblock like this you, well I did, you just 'blame' the people involved, rather than the people responsible. So this scene really made me think about that and re-evaluate my automatic response to those sorts of incidents. So yeah this was the moment when the show properly captured me because a truly good show should make you rethink things and provoke some sort of response within you. I feel weird speaking about it like this because this isn't some random scene they added and it's not a script as such it's a real event but I find with this show you sort of detach it a little? I can't really explain it.
→ The end of this episode with Teenage Dirtbag and Poke being totally stonyfaced is just so heartbreaking and perfect. On the commentary Simon(?) says he had this in mind for so long and wasn't sure if it would fit and then it worked perfectly and I would indeed agree with that.

Colbert:I liked Pocahontas. Wonderful music.

Episode One - Get Some
Episode Two - The Cradle of Civilization

Okay, I'm supertired, and have only three easily-distinguished, semi-coherent comments on this:

1) Yes. The car scene. You phrased it perfectly.
2) WALT/BRAD <3.
3) Gorgeous, as always.

1. I'm so glad someone else gets what I mean, I wasn't sure if that was just drivel or actual words.
2. I don't know why but over the last couple of watches I've found myself thinking Brad/Walt - damn them all for being so slashy!
3. Thank you.

That scene just killed me. And in the book? How he apparently "slipped" in her brains? I just... It kind of makes me sick to even talk about it, but it was just gorgeously portrayed.

And yes! I just... after that roadblock-incident, my little shipper heart has just wanted Brad/Walt fanfic. It's seriously unreal, just how slashy all these characters are.

Yeah. God I can't even begin to imagine how fucked up that must've been for Rudy to film.

Yes, how Brad just explodes at him and then sees how fucked up Walt is and just comforts him. God they're adorable.

Oh, yeah. For the guys who actually went through it the first, real time... man. I admire them, I really do.

Yes! And then the way Walt just goes with him, and when he's sitting down in the humvee, how he looks up at Brad, all "Brad? What do I do? What have I done?" Oh, it killed me.

Yeah for Kocher and Carizales as well but they are at least not playing themselves, Rudy is really Rudy in that situation and I just think he's so brave to put himself through it again. They're so amazing.

God yes. It pains me so much to watch him be so utterly broken.

Rudy... he truly is an amazing specimen. I stumbled across his site the other day and found out a lot of things I didn't know about him before. I guess before I just thought of him as Recon Marine!Fruity, but, really, he's such a strong person. I admire him very, very, very much.

Yes! Every time I see that scene, I go and read the first few passages of The Temptation of the LT (by [livejournal.com profile] alethialia), just for the description of Brad rubbing Walt's neck with his thumb. Obsessive? Yeah, maybe.

Yeah, I read the article where he talks about all the crap he went through and it amazes me that he still has such warmth, certainly in the roundtable he's like a little boy just radiating love and energy.

I love that fic, I must say.

btw, I don't think I have you friended, would it be alright for me to friend you?

Exactly! He went through so much, but he's such a gorgeous, gorgeous human being now. It takes a formidable person to do that.

Yess, it's gorgeous. I have to admit that I kind of wished for Nate to be jealous in the beginning, but really, the way it really is there is much better than that idea.

Sure! It'd be more than alright =]. And oh! Is that Anne Hathaway on your icon? Every time I see her nowadays, I keep thinking, "Anne Hathaway and Stark Sands = Shakespeare <3."

Date: 2009-08-20 04:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] memoryfloodsin.livejournal.com
Yes it does indeed.

It is, I wanted to see that Twelfth Night sooo badly, Anne, Raul, Audra, Julie and Stark?! (and that was before I'd watched Gen Kill) hell yes! Urgh stupid Atlantic ocean.

Date: 2009-08-20 04:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aboutademongirl.livejournal.com
Yesss. Oh, how I wanted to see it. That pesky Atlantic! Srsly, the world should just go back to when all the continents were connected.

I've been trying to convince the tectonic plates of this for ages that they should all just realign but none of them seem to listen to me. *curses*

*nods sadly* Yes, I wrote a petition and sent it off to Atlas, but he just told me that he had his "hands full".

LOL! Honestly, men! They act like they've got the weight of the world on their shoulders. *shakes head*

Psht. I think Atlas just likes having regular showers whenever he tips the world slightly to the left - he can only do that if there are oceans to be had.

This episode is WIN all around. The Christ-lover scene is just EPIC. It has got to be one of my favorite scenes in all of GK. I love Brad/Walt. So, SO much. There's a good one I'll have to find that's Brad/Walt, Brad/Nate. I'll look for it tonight.

"Oh, no. Now not only do we have to worry about all the Charms you've eaten, but now Brad's just pissed off God."

- I was just listening to the commentary for this episode again and it never fails to make me love them more.

- There's a lot more Jon Huertas in this one. Yay!

- Great picspam. :D

I wish I could distinguish Stark's voice more though, he sounds like Ben(?) and then I get confused, I think this is the commentary with Stark and Ben as well, right?

Yeah, I don't know whether I should after the eventual 7 picspams like this but I'd love to do one of Jon/Poke and one of Pawal/Walt. Hmmm.

Thanks!

I think Stark's commentary was ep. 3. I remember confusing Ben's and Stark's voices as well. I'd think one was speaking but then really the other one was.

Well, whatever you decide, it'll be awesome having picspams of each of them. Pawel is just too cute. :D

I wish the damn booklet would say what's on each so you don't have to put the discs in to find out. Grrr, fail HBO, FAIL!

Pawal is sooo adorable, I rewatched Under the Tuscan Sun the other day - urgh so sweet!!!

Is Pawel a big part of Under the Tuscan Sun? Even then, I don't think a small part would stop me from watching.

Not massive but fairly large yeah. It's such a good film though, imo. Plus, Sandra Oh and Diane Lane - you cannot go wrong!

It's really hard for me to pick a favourite episode, but if I had to? I'd probably pick this one, and I can't even really tell you why.

Thank you for the gorgeous selection!

That's one of the things I love about this series, that it doesn't overly dramatize (yes, it dramatizes to an extent, but not in the way the majority of war dramas do) - it just presents moments, and lets them speak for themselves.

Stark Sands please stop having such gorgeous eyes you make picspamming incredibly distracting!

Imagine the distraction of acting opposite him, when he turns those eyes on you!

Date: 2009-08-21 12:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] memoryfloodsin.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think in lesser hands it might've been tempting to over-dramatise and not realise that actually although there aren't some of the massive battles, epic rescue plots etc there is plenty of drama and that's all it needs is to be left to speak for itself.

God I can't even begin! I feel there should be Stark/Alexander fic dealing with this phenomenon!
